Forgotten Missouri: What the Books Don't Tell
Originates: Kansas City/St. Louis, Missouri.

Is Missouri considered the North, South, or the Mid-West? If you answered
the South you would be correct. English speaking pioneers who settled here were from the slave holding states of Virginia, Kentucky, and the Carolinas. They brought with them their culture, politics and slaves, via the old National Road. In St. Louis they met men with stiff defiance from the already settled French who had a somewhat permissive attitude about slavery, and the societies lived side by side.

In this atmosphere, free blacks prospered, and a type of slavery, different from anywhere else in America, was practiced. Contributions and influence that blacks made during this time period can be seen today. This tour is a celebration of 250 years of African American history and the culture that survived and evolved what it is today. Missouri is blessed by some one of a kind architecture, great food, innovative music and a friendliness that is hard to beat.
Day 1- Kansas City
This afternoon visit the museums of the 18th and Vine area. This includes the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the Kansas City Jazz Museum and the Gem Theater. Tonight, after a dinner of world famous Kansas City BBQ, sample the nightlife that that jazz greats such as Charlie Parker made famous.

Day 2 - Independence
Today depart Kansas City and head north to St. Joseph. Visit the starting point for one of the greatest experiments of the Midwest-the Pony Express Museum. Then tour one of the states best historical museums- the Patee House Museum. Amid it's full size collection of frontier businesses is the house where the notorious bank robber Jesse James was killed. See the actual picture he was hanging when he was shot.

After lunch, head back towards Kansas City, with several stops along the way. Drive through the agriculturally rich land where barley, hops and tobacco have provided the wealth of fourth and fifth generation owners. Stroll Historic Main Street, have a sip of whiskey, at McCormick Distilling Company, the oldest continuously operating distiller in the nation, or taste wines at the Pirtle's Winery. After Weston, take a short tour to Leavenworth, Kansas the see the National Buffalo Soldier Monument. Then on to Parkville, a town economically supported by Jesse James bank robberies. Parkville’s main street is an ideal location for shopping for Missouri handicrafts. Overnight in Independence.

Day 3 - Columbia
Visit the home of Harry S. Truman, our 33rd U.S. President, who integrated the U.S.Military. Visiting the National Frontier Trails Center, share the experience of the pioneers settled the west.

Late morning we depart from Independence for Mid-state Missouri. You first visit will be the little town of Rocheport, where you will visit a proposed stop on the Underground Railroad. Then arrive in Lexington, where Antebellum Missouri really exists. If time has not stopped here, it certainly has slowed down. Here the Civil War, the Pony Express, the Santa Fe Trail, and the thousands of Antebellum houses give testimony to the development of America's heartland. Here in Little Dixie are the states last vestiges of urban and rural plantations with slave quarters, the site of the three day Civil War Battle, and the Madonna of the Trails Statue. Depart Lexington for Higginsville and visit the Confederate Memorial Historic Site. Enjoy lunch at the Old Tavern in Arrow Rock. Arrow Rock was at the crossroads of Antebellum Missouri. Lewis and Clark mention it in their travel. The Sante Fe and the Old National Trails passed through. Today Arrow Rock is a living museum. Not far from Arrow Rock, visit Pennytown Baptist Church. Pennytown is the oldest and only black town in the state of Missouri. Cross into Cooper County where we visit three plantations and witness the artistry of the slaves workmanship. Stay overnight in Columbia.

Day 4 - St. Louis
Start this morning with the black history tour "From Fur-Trappers to Ragtime Millionaires." You have heard and seen vestiges, of the slaves' life in the state, but now you will experience the monuments and buildings that free blacks of the same era left to the city. After lunch at the oldest black owned business in the state, visit Jefferson Barracks, the oldest and in its time the largest, military in the west of the Mississippi. The Barracks played an important role in Black military history. Enjoy a final evening of dinner and dancing at any of the city’s entertainment areas.

Day 5 - Depart for home.
