Travel’s 8 Most Overrated/Underrated Attractions

Something being underrated doesn’t imply it’s the greatest; it merely means it’s better than most people think. Overrated does not imply that something isn’t excellent — or even fantastic — but rather that it isn’t as good as most people believe.
It is about reducing or increasing the status of things when they are overrated or undervalued. It comes down to whether you believe others value it too highly or too lowly in comparison to its real worth.
Here are five things that I believe are underappreciated.
- The Big Front Seat on Spirit Airlines. This is probably one of the greatest travel bargains, alongside the Southwest Airlines companion pass and Alaska Airlines $99 credit card companion ticket. Pre-pandemic Spirit Airlines has increased its dependability, joined PreCheck, and is now offering in-flight internet. Aside from recent operational issues, the airline isn’t quite as terrible as it formerly was (indeed, they aren’t nearly as bad as they used to want you to believe!).
They offer what you’d consider first-class seats for a fraction of the price of coach, sometimes less than $40. And you’ll receive precisely what they’re advertising – a Big Front Seat – with no additional perks other than an earlier boarding time. It’s first class on a steadily improving airline for less than you would expect.

- Uber. Their reputation was tarnished, and they spent a lot of time attempting to seem pleasant. They are no longer the underdogs in a battle for the right to operate with lawmakers in the pockets of cab owners. They’re now the ones that are obstructing competitors. They also seem to have tempered their business aspirations.
But it’s hard to believe I’ve only been covering Uber for nine years. It’s so much simpler to go about new places now that I can call a vehicle with the press of a button on my phone and know precisely where the car is on its way to pick me up. At the conclusion of the trip, there isn’t even a tangible money transaction. When I do take a cab, I have to remind myself that I must pay before exiting the vehicle and walking away.
I don’t drive very much, and I don’t even hire vehicles on most of my travels, thanks in large part to Uber and rivals. My wife and I share a car, and I don’t drive very often.
- Hyatt’s World. When the Gold Passport was renamed World of Hyatt, there were no significant modifications to the points-earning and redemption scheme. For anybody who can make the chain’s 725-plus hotel footprint work, its highest elite tier is still the most rewarding. No one else handles confirmed suites in the same manner, much alone premium suite redemption possibilities. Nobody else serves a complete (rather than continental) breakfast.
The second elite category, which isn’t competitive with Marriott or Hilton, as well as informing those who used to qualify on 25 stays that they weren’t as significant as they thought, sparked outrage. In return for expired free nights, they also got rid of check-in facilities. They introduced suite upgrades for top elites if available at check-in, as well as a personal representative to help with all things Hyatt, but the My Hyatt Concierge program’s implementation might be improved.
Despite the addition of brands and alliance member hotels, Hyatt still need a larger hotel footprint. They also enable free point transfers between members, and redemptions from a top-tier elite account provide the receiver that status for the duration of their stay. It’s a pity they haven’t actively courted disgruntled Marriott members through status challenges, choosing instead to attract American Airlines passengers!

- Business Class on American Airlines. It is any US airline’s finest international business class offering. The lounges are better than Delta’s, and the bedding is much nicer. They don’t have doors like Delta, but the seats are roomy, and they don’t fly the same 767s as Delta. Cabin crews are a mixed bag, to be sure, but how much better are their competitors when they aren’t competing against Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, or ANA?

- With fuel surcharges, British Airways business and first class awards. The product is decades behind its rivals, but it is catching up with its new seats, and it has finally made headway on inflight internet. The seats in business class are crammed up like sardines. First class is more crowded and cramped than first class in the United States. And on top of that, if you spend miles on a poor product, you’ll be hit with a hefty cash fee.
The new business class seats with direct aisle access and doors are a huge improvement. However, in addition to the miles you’re redeeming for a substandard product, reward redemption on BA may entail a financial co-pay of $1000 or more.

However, they’ve been beaten up so badly on quality and price that it’s easy to forget that award availability is still good and that redeeming miles is still a good deal, especially in first class using American Airlines or Alaska miles when nothing else in a premium cabin is available, in my opinion. Surcharges on first-class awards are similar to purchasing a coach ticket and using miles for a guaranteed triple upgrade.
First Class on British Airways
Here are the three things I believe are overrated:
- Delta’s dependability is legendary. Except for Hawaiian (which doesn’t have much severe weather) and Alaska, Delta is renowned for not canceling flights and running a more on-time airline than the others. Delta’s competitive advantage is TechOps, which is able to make aircraft ready to fly despite having an older fleet than rivals.
And their dependability has given the product a halo, making consumers desire to fly them. In a frequent flyer program, people are ready to give up value. They’re also ready to overlook flaws in the goods (they went to 36 inch pitch in first class long before American did).
At the end of the day, they’re more dependable, but their system went down many times during the holidays, and the difference in on-time performance is typically just a few percentage points. And because of that, they shouldn’t get as much of a pass on the rest of their goods as they do.

- Polaris United is a company based in the United States. It took years for new seats to be installed on aircraft; United introduced the product five years ago, but misled consumers with its marketing. For months, customers would contact me claiming that they would get the new seats since United’s website showed their reservation as “Polaris,” despite the fact that “Polaris” was just United’s new long-haul brand name.
United boasts the finest business class bedding in the sky, but even the new seats are just “keeping up with the Joneses” at best, according to their CEO. It’s a lie-flat direct aisle access seat with less legroom per person than rivals. It’s a way to move away from the traditional six- and eight-across seating configurations on Boeing 777s without taking up more cabin room.
To be sure, it’s an improvement, and it’s a cause to fly United again. Even without the soft product cutbacks, it isn’t one of the best business classes in the world, or even one of the best business seats provided by a US carrier.

- Centurion lounges by American Express These lounges, I’ve dubbed them, are so packed that no one goes there anymore. When they initially debuted, they were praised for being truly superior than airline lounges in the United States, with more style, better beverages, and excellent hot food options. Showers and spas are available in some of the rooms. However, excellent lounges attract customers who spend more time and visit the lounge more often than you would anticipate, resulting in overcrowding. As they attempt to manage the expense that comes with the volume, the food investment seems to have been reduced compared to previous years. Nonetheless, they are pleasant, which is why so many people visit and they get crowded. They aren’t all, by any means, constantly packed.

What about the Goldilocks method, when everything is just right? It was more difficult for me to come up with items that are properly rated:
- Southeast Asian street food Bangkok’s street cuisine, Kuala Lumpur’s, Penang’s, and Singapore’s food stalls are well-known throughout the globe. Even yet, I’m inclined to argue that they’re still underappreciated because they’re so excellent. However, I believe it is more accurate to state that they just live up to the expectations.
