In India, American Airlines has a new partner.

on September 28, 2021 by Gary Leff

For years, American Airlines was hesitant to fly to India (after discontinuing its own Chicago – Delhi route), owing to a lack of a partner in the nation. It had no viable method to feed traffic to and from whichever city it flew to after losing its relationship with Jet Airways to Delta.

Prior to the pandemic, American’s foreign flying strategy was largely reliant on its joint venture partners. They viewed British Airways as a viable option for transporting people to India. Then, after a reconciliation with Qatar Airways, Doha became a new gateway to India, Pakistan, and the surrounding area.

To compensate for the loss of its relationship with LATAM, American has been on a roll, forming alliances with JetBlue and Alaska in the United States, purchasing a share in Brazil’s Gol, and partnering with South American ultra low cost carrier Jetsmart (also to Delta).

They’ve now secured another codeshare partner in IndiGo, an Indian low-cost airline, to help them expand its planned New York-Delhi and Seattle-Bangalore routes.

Thanks to a new codeshare arrangement with IndiGo, India’s largest airline, American Airlines will be expanding its reach throughout the country this autumn. The arrangement, which was announced today, will put American Airlines’ code on 29 of IndiGo’s domestic Indian itineraries, offering a handy alternative for American Airlines passengers coming on the carrier’s new Bengaluru (BLR) and Delhi (DEL) flights to India. The codeshare is scheduled to begin in October, when American starts new service between New York (JFK) and DEL on Oct. 31 and Seattle (SEA) and BLR on Jan. 4, 2022, pending permission from the US and Indian governments.

American will put its code on 29 IndiGo domestic flights departing from the two cities it intends to service, and AAdvantage members will be able to earn miles on those flights. That’s a small relationship with little benefit beyond interline ticketing, particularly because purchasing codeshares is seldom a painless experience for the passenger.

Ironically, former US Airways CEO Rakesh Gangwal co-founded IndiGo, but this is a more distant connection than JetSmart being part of a portfolio owned by Bill Franke, American Airlines (and former US Airways) Chairman Doug Parker’s mentor.
