Norwegian Cruise Line announced that only one pre-cruise test will be required for guests. The new policy is a result of the latest advancements in technology, which has reduced testing time by nearly 70 percent and eliminated travel associated with getting blood drawn.

Guests are notified of modifications to the pre-cruise testing via a message from Norwegian Cruise Line. The cruise company is reducing its procedures, with clients simply having to take a single pre-cruise exam rather than two tests at home and at the terminal, according to a letter.
Changes to Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pre-Cruise Testing
The cruise company alerts passengers about a change in pre-cruise testing that will take effect on sailings beginning January 17, 2022. Guests will no longer be required to take two exams before to embarking on their cruise, since testing at the terminal at embarkation is no longer required. Guests will be able to complete their exam at their leisure.

“While in the past we have required guests boarding our ships to test twice for COVID-19, once at home and a second time at the pier before embarkation,” NCL writes in a letter sent to guests on November 15, “now, effective for voyages beginning January 17, 2022, we will only require our guests to test once at home.” This will result in a more simplified check-in procedure with less one-on-one interaction and shorter wait times.”

The update was made to make the check-in procedure more efficient. It also aligns NCL with other cruise lines, which only ask passengers to take one exam. Guests must still provide a negative test result obtained within two days of departure, plus an additional day for overseas travellers.
“At the time of check-in, guests will be required to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 antigen or PCR test result administered by a verified third party at least two days prior to boarding for cruises departing from a U.S. port, and three days prior for voyages departing from a non-U.S. port,” NCL continued.
Guests Received a Letter from Norwegian Cruise Line
The good news is that pre-cruise testing at the terminal isn’t going away, and visitors may utilize Norwegian Cruise Line’s option if they can’t show a negative test result before embarkation. Pre-cruise testing will cost $99 per passenger at the terminal.
The change in pre-cruise testing will take effect only one day after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) extended Conditional Sailing Order expires on January 15, 2022. From then forward, cruise companies will continue to work with the CDC on a voluntary initiative.
Norwegian Cruise Line has extended its fully vaccinated sailings into the future to ensure that passengers and staff are protected during these uncertain times. The vaccination procedures of Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean have been extended until March 2022.
