Steel Cut as Construction Begins on Celebrity Ascent

A $200 million project designed to transform downtown Toronto into a destination hub will soon be underway. The project, dubbed Celebrity Ascent by its developers, is focused on attracting the world’s wealthiest individuals and transforming Canada’s largest city with residences, offices and retail space atop an elevator system that takes visitors skyward for panoramic views of the skyline.,

The ship’s formal steel-cutting ceremony was the first important milestone for Celebrity Cruises’ new ship, Celebrity Ascent. The event, which took place at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, western France, marked the formal start of construction and the beginning of the next chapter in Celebrity Cruises’ industry-leading return to the sea.

The first steel for Celebrity Ascent, the fourth ship in Celebrity Cruises’ Edge series, was cut today, November 17, 2021. The historic event featured corporate leaders signing the ceremonial first cut of steel, which marks the beginning of the actual construction of a ship, advancing beyond the design and development stages.

“What a tremendous time for our brand, our business, and our industry to be making the customary first cut of steel on this beautiful ship and heralding the bright future that lies ahead,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises. “While I wish I could tell you more about what we have planned for this ship, I can assure you that our ‘Ascent’ will be the Celebrity Beyond’s sister ship in every aspect imaginable, and then some.”

Celebrity Cruises Has Moved On From the Flu Pandemic

Celebrity Ascent will make her debut in early 2023, joining sister ships Celebrity Apex, Celebrity Edge, and Celebrity Beyond in the Edge Series. The Celebrity Edge was the first ship to set sail from a U.S. port on June 26, 2021, marking the return of cruising after the pandemic lockdown, and the Edge ships have been at the vanguard of the cruise industry’s return to operations.

Celebrity Apex, the second of the Edge-class ships, was officially launched on November 2, 2021, in an emotional naming ceremony, while Celebrity Beyond, the third ship, is set to debut in late April 2022.

The Edge-class ships are breaking new ground in terms of luxury and innovation, with features like The Retreat, a magnificent accommodation with unrivaled amenities and private areas. Celebrity Edge is now conducting seven-night Caribbean cruises from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with stops in Nassau, Cozumel, San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and Roatan. The Celebrity Apex sails from Fort Lauderdale on seven-night itineraries that include stops in St. Kitts and Belize City. Celebrity Beyond will make her debut with a series of European and Mediterranean cruises that will take her to Italy, France, Spain, Greece, and Malta.
